2003 Lake Martha

Curly-Leaf Weed Control Plan

Dear Lakeshore Residents:

The Lake Martha Lake Association has been exploring better methods to control the Curly-Leaf Pondweed problem that clogs our lakeshore every year in the late spring/early summer.

This year we are proposing to use Midwest AquaCare Inc. to treat the Curly-Leaf Pondweed using a new and highly effective chemical called Aquathol-Super-K. This chemical is approved and recommended by both the DNR and the Army Corp of Engineers for treatment of Curly-Leaf Pondweed. The chemical is applied in early May, or when the water temp hits 60 degrees, and when the plant is just beginning to sprout. This chemical kills the plant within a day or two of treatment, and reduces the amount of plant matter that falls back to the lake bottom to decay. Since Curly-Leaf seedpods can remain dormant for up to 4 years, this treatment must still be repeated each year for best long-term results.

Midwest AquaCare offers a number of professional treatment options, including a) sale of the chemical for do-it-yourself treatment, b) treatment by the lakeshore footage, and c) treatment by the Acre. The treatment option that we feel will be most effective from both a cost and labor standpoint, is the treatment by the lakeshore footage option. Based on the results of this treatment, we may consider other options in following years.

The cost of this treatment is $1.90 per lakeshore foot (1x100 feet out). As in past years, the DNR permit fee will be paid by the Lake Association. Midwest AquaCare will bill each resident individually for the lakeshore footage treated after the treatment has been applied. Treatment applications will be distributed to all residents. Please return all completed forms to Mike Rydberg by March 15th.

We strongly encourage all lake residents to participate in this program, and to contribute toward making Lake Martha a clean lake that we all can enjoy the entire boating season.

Treatment Application Instructions:

• Fill out request cards with name address and number of lakeshore feet to be treated (single treatment option only)

• Sketch out the area to be treated in the space provided.

• Return cards to Mike Rydberg by March 15th.

• Midwest AquaCare will bill each resident individually at $1.90 per foot after treatment has been applied

• If we exceed 2000 total feet, a 5% discount will be applied, price drops to $1.80 per foot.

• Lake Martha Lake Association will pay for DNR permit fee $200.
